What are opioids?
Opioids are a class of drugs used to reduce pain, commonly broken into three types:
Prescriptions
Prescription opioids can be prescribed by doctors to treat moderate to severe pain but can also have serious risks and side effects. Common types are oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine, and methadone.
Fentanyl
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50-100 times more powerful than other opioids. Pharmaceutical Fentanyl is approved for treating severe pain, however illegal fentanyl has been on the rise and is the number one source of drug-related overdoses.
Heroin
Heroin is an illegal opioid, made from morphine, a natural substance taken from the seed pod of various opium poppy plants. Heroin can be a white or brown powder, or a black sticky substance known as black tar heroin.
